Yuri Trutnev invited the leadership of Namibian universities to visit FEFU

In Windhoek (Namibia), Deputy Prime Minister - Presidential Plenipotentiary to the DFO Yury Trutnev discussed Russian-Namibian cooperation in education with representatives of the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Namibia and representatives of Namibian universities.

The event was attended by Vice-Rector of the Namibian University of Science and Technology Pramanathan Goverdler, Vice-Rector of the Namibian State University Pi-El Kavin Frank, Deputy Director of the Planning and Quality Assurance Department of the Ministry of Higher Education of the Republic of Namibia Vincent Van Roy, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the Namibian University of Science and Technology Alina Kay Segobay.

“Today we would like to talk about expanding cooperation. In Russia, there are 377 students from Namibia (332 people on a fee basis, and 45 people on quotas). We are ready to propose stepping up cooperation with the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFU). This is the largest university in the Far East, ”says Yuri Trutnev.

 “At the meeting there are representatives of leading universities in Namibia. We also invited to the meeting Namibian students who express an interest in betrothal in Russia, including in the Far East, ”said Alina Kay Segobay.

Yuri Trutnev invited representatives of Namibian universities to personally visit FEFU and discuss the possibility of interaction with the university management. “It is easiest for Namibian universities to work with FEFU directly. I head the Supervisory Board of this university. FEFU has a number of strong directions. It was decided to establish nuclear and proton medicine centers in FEFU on Russky Island. Such an instruction was given by President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. Russia is one of the few countries that has competencies in this area. We can cooperate both in the direction of the exchange of students, and in the field of formation and implementation of joint educational programs. Many leaders of Namibia studied in the USSR. I am sure that cooperation in the field of education should be strengthened. The Russian side is ready to consider questions including on the increase in quotas ",

The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that the development of relations in the field of education will be one of the issues to be discussed at the eighth meeting of the Intergovernmental Russian-Namibian Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation. Yuri Trutnev also noted that the assistance of the Namibian universities will be ready to provide the Ministry of the Russian Federation for the development of the Far East and the Arctic.

Assistance in enhancing cooperation in the field of education is provided by the Agency of the Far East for attracting investment and supporting exports (ANO API). “The most sought-after specialties for Namibia are medicine, agriculture, mining, and engineering. During the negotiations of our Agency and the leadership of FEFU, an agreement was reached on the readiness of the university with the appropriate decision of the Government of the Russian Federation to expand the number of quotas for admission to training African students, including from Namibia, on educational programs that meet the above needs of Namibia. In addition, FEFU confirmed its readiness to cooperate with Namibia in terms of research and scientific activities, ”said Leonid Petukhov, Director General of ANO API.

 “The Far Eastern Federal University is one of 10 Russian universities with a federal status. At present, over 3.5 thousand people (15, 22% of the total number of students) from 74 countries are studying at FEFU. Forty students from 16 African countries, including South Africa, Ethiopia, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Egypt, and others are enrolled in FEFU according to the quota of the Government of the Russian Federation. Thanks to the support of ANO API, on May 26, 2017 between FEFU and the Namibian pharmaceutical group Aspen signed a Memorandum of Understanding on joint training in the treatment of cardiovascular pathologies, research and related projects, and organizing internships for pharmacy students at the plant Nanolek, joint development of recommendations and standards in the field of treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases

Recall, FEFU is in the top 100 QS BRICS universities, as well as in the top three among Russian universities in medicine and relevant scientific activities. At present, more than 23 thousand Russian and foreign students are trained in FEFU, who study in more than 200 educational programs.
