For the Kamchatka region will develop a program for the development of tourism

The Far East Agency for Attracting Investments and Export Support (ANO API) will develop a tourism development program for the Kamchatka Territory aimed at qualitative changes in the region’s image, modernization and construction of a new tourist infrastructure and improvement of the quality of the service sector. The document will be created jointly with the Federal Tourism Agency, the Ministry of Eastern and Eastern Development of Russia and the region.

“We are considering the possibility of using the developments of other countries. The experience of Iceland is similar to the natural-climatic conditions similar to Kamchatka, the small population, the needs of the region in the construction of earthquake-resistant houses, and the provision of food to the residents. Representatives of governmental organizations and tourist organizations of this country are ready to assist us in developing a tourism development program in Kamchatka, ”explained Leonid Petukhov, the general director of ANO API.

The population in Iceland is 335 thousand people, in Kamchatka - 315 thousand people. Iceland, like Kamchatka, is called the land of ice and flame. The main reason for visiting Iceland is the unique nature. This reason, according to local companies, is called by 83% of foreign tourists. In 2008-2016, more tourists visited Iceland than in the previous 60 years. If we talk about quality jumps, the tourist flow from 2010 to 2018 has grown more than 5 times - up to 2.3 million people. The total number of visitors to the country was 7 times the number of citizens themselves. A number of factors contributed to tourist popularity: the eruption of the Eyjafjallajöküdul volcano in 2010 (and again after the less devastating eruption of 2011 from Grimsvotn), film making, television interest, social media growth and successful marketing campaigns. “Various companies and government agencies are working to promote tourism in Iceland, convenient sites for tourists are being created. It is necessary that Kamchatka also become a place of a tourist boom, ”believes Leonid Petukhov.

According to estimates by the Icelandic consulting company Gamma (Gamma), more than 95 percent of tourists say that their expectations of the trip have been met, and more than 80 percent report the likelihood of a return visit to the country. The greatest increase in tourists to Iceland is provided by tourists from the United States (more than 576 thousand) of the United Kingdom (503 thousand). The total tourist flow from these two countries amounted to about 41% of the total number of travelers visiting Iceland. The share of guests from Central and Southern Europe increased by 21.8%, from 356 thousand to 434 thousand people. The interest of tourists from China is increasing, although they still make up 3.9% of the total number of tourists. Iceland is visited by Russian citizens. Last year, 14 thousand Russians arrived in the country.

According to Leonid Petukhov, the beauty of Kamchatka, one of the most peculiar and interesting in the world, is not only not inferior, and often surpasses this European country. “We see the interest of Russians and citizens of other countries in Kamchatka. But the flow of tourists is several times less than in Iceland, ”the general director of ANO API noted. He recalled that the total number of tourists in the Kamchatka region in 2018, according to preliminary data, was 215.5 thousand people, of which more than 25 thousand people were foreigners. The greatest interest to Kamchatka is shown by tourists from the USA, China, Germany, Australia and Japan. A significant number of tourists reside from the Republic of Korea, as well as from the Philippines, Britain, Canada, France, Switzerland. This year, 18 cruise liners are scheduled to enter the port of Petropavlovsk.

“The interest in tourism in Iceland led to the start of new projects in the field of logistics (air travel, car rental), accommodation, sightseeing and entertainment. Public-private partnership projects are launched to modernize and develop the road network, airports and other elements of the basic infrastructure. The number of airlines organizing flights to Iceland increased from eight in 2005 to 29 in 2018 due to the reorientation of the airport to a transport hub between Europe and North America. All these developments may be relevant for the Kamchatka Territory taking into account the specifics of the Far East, ”explained Leonid Petukhov.

In 2010-2016, thanks to the development of the tourism sector in Iceland, almost 12 thousand jobs were created. This is more than half of the new jobs created in these years in all areas of the economy. Now in the country there are about 140 hotels, more than 50 of which are located in the capital. The hotel industry includes a mix of Icelandic hotel chains and independent hotels and hostels, as well as a limited number of global brands that are managed by Icelandic operators under license. In turn, 134 units of collective accommodation facilities are registered in Kamchatka, in which 6,175 beds are organized, and about 6 thousand people are employed in the industry. 69 tour operators and 208 agent companies are currently working on the tourist services market in the region. In the next three years, in Kamchatka it is planned to create in addition more than 500 rooms in collective accommodation facilities. “Kamchatka has tremendous tourist potential. But it has not yet been disclosed. In order for tourists to feel comfortable, to want to come back to the region, we need comfortable hotels, clear and convenient logistics. Work in this direction goes. In mid-June, the renewed passenger terminal of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Airport opened. In a couple of years, a modern airport terminal will be built. New hotels are appearing, projects are being launched in the tourism sector. But additional efforts are needed to stimulate the industry, ”said Leonid Petukhov, General Director of ANO API. so that tourists are comfortable, that they want to come back to the region, we need comfortable hotels, clear and convenient logistics. New hotels are appearing, projects are being launched in the tourism sector. But additional efforts are needed to stimulate the industry, ”said Leonid Petukhov, General Director of ANO API. New hotels are appearing, projects are being launched in the tourism sector. But additional efforts are needed to stimulate the industry, ”said Leonid Petukhov, General Director of ANO API.

The launch of tourist projects is facilitated by preferential modes of TOR and the Free Port. According to the information of the Corporation for the Development of the Far East, agreements on investment activities in Kamchatka under the framework of the TOR and SPV regimes have been concluded with 200 residents. Moreover, 31 projects (20 projects in TOR and 11 in SPV) in the amount of 5.4 billion rubles and designed to create about 1,060 jobs are being implemented in the hospitality industry. One of them in the amount of 1.1 billion rubles has already been commissioned, the rest are in various stages of implementation.

“The two regions have many common goals and there are common problem aspects. This, for example, seasonality of business, lack of hotel facilities, maintenance of infrastructure in difficult climatic conditions. It is advisable to apply the tried and tested solutions that have been tested for years. The influx of tourists to Iceland, which has been observed in recent years, shows that decisions in the tourism industry have been successful. This experience can and should be used, ”Leonid Petukhov said.

According to the general director of ANO IPA, in order to stimulate the tourism industry in Kamchatka, it is necessary to go in several directions at once. “This is the development of program documents, and support for existing and future projects. Our agency is ready to provide business with all the necessary support from the moment the idea was conceived and the conceptualized to the expansion of business, ”he stressed.

Issues of creating and promoting the image of Iceland and the possibility of transferring the Icelandic experience to the Far East, the construction of hotels and the formation of high-quality tourism infrastructure, models of attracting investment in tourism projects were discussed during the working visit of the delegation of ANO IPA in Reykjavik. The Agency delegation held meetings with representatives of the Icelandic Tourist Board (Icelandic Tourist Board), the Promote Iceland company, and the consulting companies Islenska and Gamma (Gamma).
